21 Questions for Co-Dependents and Children of Alcoholics/Addicts

Up to 60% of people who have lived with alcoholics or addicts in the present or past are unaware that they have been affected by the experience. These questions may reveal some important answers for you.

  1. Do you feel guilty and responsible for the drinking or drug problem of a family member of friend?
  2. Does that person's behavior, when drinking/drugging, cause you embarrassment?
  3. Have money problems become a focus of concern to you and others in your family?
  4. Is it hard to talk about the dependent person's problem with other members of the family or with friends-- is it a "family secret"?
  5. Do you cry often or feel like crying?
  6. Does your mood swing from happy to sad in response to what's happening to your loved one's mood?
  7. Do you have trouble knowing what you're feeling?
  8. Have you felt anger or frustration toward someone for drinking or using drugs?
  9. Are your feelings blocked, frozen or closed off?
  10. Do you try to regulate or monitor in any way the amount of alcohol or drugs that person uses? (Hiding or throwing away alcohol or drugs?)
  11. Do you hope the drinking/using will stop and everything will be "like it used to be"?
  12. Have you taken on responsibilities that used to be his/hers?
  13. Do you tend to see most responsibilities as yours?
  14. Do you feel as if you are a "fake" - that no one knows the real you?
  15. Have you questioned your own drinking or drug use?
  16. Does the smell of beer or liquor make you sick or tense?
  17. Do you have physical problems yourself such as headaches, backaches, nausea, weight gain or loss, stomach pain, insomnia, etc.?
  18. Do you feel hopeless and depressed, unable to "fix it" no matter what you've done?
  19. Do you keep hoping it will be better tomorrow, or next week or next year?
  20. Do you feel different from others - that no one else has a problem quite like yours?
  21. Do you wonder why, even though you are competent, that life doesn't seem to be working out the way you had planned?

Scoring

A yes to any one of these questions could indicate that chemical dependency counseling would be helpful
